Why using the Gautrain is better than driving to work
I used to take the Gautrain to work a few years ago when I used to work in Sandton and Rosebank. And then my company moved to Waverley which was a problem because there was no Gautrain bus coming past my work from the Rosebank Gautrain station. So I had to start driving to work again – which sucked.
The problem with driving to work with your car
When I had to start driving to work again, I noticed how agitated I got because of people driving like maniacs and taxi’s cutting in front of you. And that can make you start your day off in a bad mood.
Traffic from Benoni to Sandton or Waverley is so bad and I sometimes spend hours in the car getting worked up and getting a cramp in my left leg from stepping on the clutch the whole time while I’m in bumper to bumper traffic.
The amount I pay for petrol per month is basically the same as what the Gautrain costs in a month. And currently (3 October 2018), the petrol price is at R16.85 per litre which is the highest it’s been in years. Your car also gains a great amount of kilometres and the wear and tear it goes under results in you having to replace tyres more often and service your car more often. And then there’s also the risk of having an accident and then you have to go through the dreadful process of going to a police station to make a case so that you can claim from your insurance where you have to pay an excess fee.
So all of these things adds up if you think about it. And the roads are not safe.
Why should you take the Gautrain?
There are so many reasons to take the Gautrain to work. Let’s start with less stress.
Stress free travel
I started a new job in Sandton and I drove in with my car every day for the first month. The traffic was so bad that it would sometimes take me 2 – 3 hours to get to work. And by the time I get to work, I’m so exhausted that I just want to go home again.
So I started taking the Gautrain to work again. I realised how convenient it is, how less stressed I am and how my mood changed. I can sit comfortably in my seat on the train, watching Netflix series on my phone which you can download to watch offline by the way or listen to music.
The Gautrain also departs every 10 minutes from Rhodesfield to Sandton so you don’t need to wait 30 minutes for a train. It takes me 10 mins to get from Rhodesfield to Sandton and the buses are also quite fast and on schedule when I need to get from the Sandton station to my work.
Your car can rest for a bit
The other benefits with using the Gautrain is the fact that you save on petrol, you don’t put km’s on your car, you have less wear and tear which means you don’t need to service your car that often or put new tyres on. Services are really expensive and tyres as well. So by taking the Gautrain, you’re basically keeping your car safe and new and you’re minimising the risk of getting into and accident.
I think if you phone your insurance and let them know that you’re taking the Gautrain, you should be able to lower your premium a bit.
