Swartkop Air Show 90 Years On Golden Wings 14 August 2010
I’ve had the privilege to go to the Swartkop 90 Years On Golden Wings air show on Saturday which was great as always. This was the first time in years that I’ve been to an air show. I think the last time was in 2003 at Duxford in England. We arrived just after 10am because the traffic was hectic and there was no parking and the queue stood down the road . We did a little bit of off road with our Ford Fiesta trying to get out of a small ditch. But while we were looking for parking the Mirage F1AZ was flying and I was hanging out of the window trying to look.
I also had a chance (first time ever near a fighter jet) to have a look inside the Gripen cockpit just as we came through the entrance. Although I didn’t have a clue what all the buttons did, it looked pretty impressive. I actually missed the Gripen’s display because we had to leave at 2Pm. And as we walked to the car the Mirage 800 was flying. Now that’s what I call bad timing.
There was also cool car displays at the air show like Mercedes cars and Suzuki “stunt” driving. There was also a few motorbikes, not the usual superbikes but cruisers like Harley Davidson etc.
Overall it was great as always. I don’t know when the next show is. I think the Vereeniging Air Show and the Bethlehem Air Show.
As far as I know the Swartkop Air Show is the biggest one in Gauteng. Then there is the Cape Town Ysterplaat Air Air Show. Just too bad it’s so far away.
That’s all folks.
