Just a couple of things about the new Apple iOS6 update, iPhone features and iPad features which SUCKS and makes me want to swop my iPad for a Samsung Galaxy Tablet
Hi. I’m the “not so proud” owner of an iPad 2.
I got an iPad2 as a Christmas gift from my fiance about a year ago (December will be a year). It’s great. It runs smooth, it looks slick, there are cool apps to download from the US iTunes store and it’s cool when people know you have an iPad. (Noticed that there weren’t any positive feedback in that sentence regarding the iPads functionality.)
Let me tell you about a couple of truths that I came about across while using my iPad 2 for a year and why I would rather swop it for an Samsung Galaxy 10.1 tab.
1. US iTunes app store vs. the South African iTunes app store
When I got my iPad 2 I had to open a South African iTunes account to start downloading apps etc. It automatically opens the South African iTunes store for you when you switch on your iPad. The South African iTunes store has got all the crappy apps and also a very limited amount of app when you compare it to the US iTunes store. Why they limited the apps on the SA store is a mystery. I then tried to go to the US iTunes store to try and download some apps there. I wasn’t allowed to use my South African credit card on the US iTunes store. I eventually found out from other friends and online articles that there is a way to create a US iTunes account.
You have to log out of your SA account and then click on the US flag at the bottom of iTunes. Then open an account by skipping the billing options and entering some American address that you find on Google Maps because they actually validate the address you enter.
So you can see what a mission it is to get some of the more awesome apps not found in the SA iTunes app store.
2. The new Apple maps on iOS 6 are kak!
I recently updated my iPad 2 to the new iOS 6 operating system. Why did I do this!!!?? Well, because I simply didn’t know it was going to be so kak. I wish I could go back to iOS 5. There’s a couple of features that are different like they added a clock with an alarm, some look and feel changes, the YouTube app is missing and they’ve removed Google Maps and added their own maps which I think is just called Apple maps.
I read on the news that some guy had an emergency and had to go to a hospital (Read some of it here). They follow the navigation on the iOS 6 maps and it took them to a hospital that closed 4 years ago.
So Apples new Maps for iOS 6 has a hospital near me that’s been closed/demolished for years, a pub closed for 8yrs and since demolished.
I also heard on the radio that the CEO of Apple publicly apologised for the state of the maps and that people should rather use Google maps.
3. You need to use iTunes for EVERYTHING on your iPhone and iPad!
The third thing which I hate the most is that you need to use iTunes for EVERYTHING!!! The iPad and iPhone comes out with a video app which can only play .mov files (Apple video format). So that means you can’t watch any AVI files, MKV or MP4 files. When you try to drag it over to your iPad/iPhone in iTunes it says it’s an incompatible video format. So now you have to BUY a separate app that can play these files. The one that I’m using is called AVPlayerHD which can play any video format that you can think of. It just sucks that you must have iTunes installed on a computer when you want to copy something. They should have made it like the Samsung Galaxy which works like a flash drive.
4. They added a 1 mega pixel camera to the iPad2. Seriously!
I’ve only used the camera on my iPad once and that was the first time I got it. The cameras quality is a shocking 1 megapixel which is so blurry that you can’t really make out anything on the screen. I think they should have just left it out.
5. Photo needs to be synced from a folder on your computer which deletes all the other photos on your iPad.
And the final thing. Copying photos to your iPad. You also need to use iTunes for this where you need to put all the photos that you want to sync in a folder and then sync it to your iPad using iTunes. This also deletes the current photos on your iPad. I think there is a way of doing it so that it doesn’t delete your current photos but I’m not sure what that method is and I’ve given up.
Please leave a comment if you’ve had the same experience. I just think that the Samsung Galaxy tab is overall better and much more user friendly.
