How to cancel your TV licence in South Africa and stop paying it
In the SABC’s latest financial results, it showed a 27.8% compliance level when it came to TV licence payments.
A number of South Africans own TV sets who are not using it to watch channels on SABC. Instead, they watch movies from their computers or they stream it from Netflix, Showmax or from another streaming service like Kodi. Fibre is available to post people by now and is getting cheaper by the day.
So what is the point of paying a TV license if you’re only using it to stream things and using it as a monitor?
Well, I have some good news for you. If you can prove that you don’t have any device in your house that can receive a TV broadcasting signal like a TV or decoder, you can cancel your TV license.
You can remove your TV tuner
If you’re not using your TV to receive a broadcasting signal, you can physically remove your TV’s tuner from the TV. This will remove the need for you to pay your TV license.
You will need to get a professional to come and remove it for you. It will be a good idea to keep the receipt of the company that removed it to prove to an SABC TV inspector that you have removed the tuner from your TV. The cost to get an inspector out is R300 and this might happen once a year for the SABC to confirm that you don’t own a TV. The problem with this is that the actual TV license cost is less than this.
The SABC might request to check your TV sets in your house once a year to confirm that you don’t own a TV set that can receive a broadcasting signal. But this is a bit of a grey area as no one has really confirmed that they have done this before.
Other devices that can receive a broadcasting signal.
If you own a DStv decoder or any other device that can receive a signal, you will need to pay a TV license. Even if you have a monitor that’s not a TV but you can plug DStv into it, you will need to pay a TV license.
Don’t own a TV set anymore?
If you have disposed of, sold your TV set or if it was stolen, you don’t need to pay a TV license. In this case, you need to fill in an affidavit to notify the SABC that you don’t have a TV set anymore and that you don’t need to pay a TV license. Again, they will probably send out an inspector to come and check your home for TV sets.
