Cape Town Fish Market Has Bad Service!
Wow, so where do I begin?
Last year sometime (2010) we went to the Cape Town Fish Market at Greenstone mall in Edenvale Johannesburg. Don’t get me wrong, the place looks nice. I just wish the service and the food tasted the way the place looked. Anyways, so we went in and got a table. The place was cramped like when your underpants squeeze your nuts and your jean is too tight to move it around. I think they wanted to squeeze in as many tables as they could in a small area. Obviously it’s about money and not about comfort and having a good time.
So we then ordered food and I thought the Sizzler looked quite nice. It’s the meal that comes on one of those hot plates and when the waiter brings it to you she burns your shoulders. That food was disgusting. The prawns looked like it was burned and the chef went for a smoke while cooking it and forgot about it and it was really small. Almost like tiny baby prawns. So this was the first time I went to Cape Town Fish Market. I was convinced Ocean Basket was still the best place to eat sea food.
Ok so December 2010 we went on holiday to Ballito with a friend which was by the way an awesome holiday (just in case she reads this). I think one Saturday (I wasn’t checking the calendar) we went to uShaka for the day to go and check out the awesome aquarium and the dolphin show as well as the seal show. It started to rain real hard at one stage which made us run to the car. Right next to the entrance of uSkaka was Cape Town Fish Market. I now wish it was Ocean basket. We decided to go eat something there. We first waited in the reception area for a open table. We eventually got one and sat down etc. Let me tell you how dirty the place was. There was food everywhere on the floor. It looked like some children had a food fight just before we came and there was crap everyhere. I think there was prawns on the floor and other creatures from the sea. I the floor wasn’t so damn dirty I would have ate from the floor and skipped ordering from the waiter.
We ordered a bottle of wine which was a chardonnay I think. I can’t remember who’s wine it was but it tasted like pee. I think pee would have tasted less bitter now that I think about it. (Not that I know how pee tastes, I’m only imagining). So eventually we order food after we had to hunt our waiter down. I think he forgot about the people in the dirty food fighting section where no waiter really wants to set foot. That’s probably why it was so dirty because no want’s to go there to clean it up.
Eventually after a long annoying waiting process we got our food. The waitress had an attitude like a constipated sea monkey. I think I would also have an attitude if I had to serve people in the disgusting section. If I remember correctly I ordered a piece of hake and calamari rings. Holy crap! I asked the waiter if she was being funny because I could only find 3 – 5 calamari rings in my plate. And that was it. Why do I pay more to eat at Cape Town Fish Market thinking that just because they are right next to the sea the food and service would be better?
I then decided I will never eat at Cape Town Fish Market again. Ocean Basket stays the best place to eat seafood. Especially the Ocean Basket in East Rand Mall.
I hope some people read this and doesn’t make the same mistake twice as I did.
