Canon Pixma MX494 wireless All-in-one printer review
I recently bought the Canon Pixma MX494 wireless All-in-one printer from Takealot.com. I have to say the delivery was quick. I got it the next day although they said it would be delivered within 4 days.
Cost: R829.00 from Takealot (When I bought it)
Connection: USB and WIFI
Smartphone print: You can print and scan using your smartphone
Ink and cartridges: Uses XL cartridges. One black and one colour
Dimensions: 435mm x 295mm x 189mm
Unpacking the printer was quite easy. Nothing had to be assembled like trays and moving parts. It just had a whole bunch of red stickers all over the printer that holds things in place for when it’s transported.
At first, I struggled to set up the printer. Because it was wireless, I wanted to connect it to my router and then hopefully any printer on the wireless network had to find it automatically.
But for some reason, that wasn’t the case. I read the instructions that you had to download an app on your phone and then you can basically set up the printer using your phone. But I found the easiest way to connect it to the wireless network was to go into the printer settings, and then let it pick up your WIFI router and then push the WPS button on your router to connect.
Or you can type in your wireless router password manually.
I did all of this and my laptop just didn’t want to connect to the printer. I printed out the settings sheet from the printer menu which stated that it’s connected to the WIFI router and the printer also had it’s own IP address. On my laptop, I went into command prompt and tried to ping it by typing in ping 192.168.0.11. But it couldn’t find anything. I Google and Googled and played around with the printed settings but to no avail.
In the end, what fixed the problem was a laptop restart.
When I switched on my other laptop, the printer was picked up automatically and I was able to scan, print and use all of the other functions.
I will give this printer an 8/10. It’s a sturdy printer. Was actually very easy to set up once you restart your laptop and the print quality is great!
