How to setup Google Drive and Wamp Server to automatically backup and also sync files between computers

Tutorial on how to link your Wamp Server files and database with Google Drive so that your files are backed up and synced with your other computer. You can now pretty much work from anywhere.

Step 1

Install Google Drive desktop so that it creates a Google Drive folder. Anything that you copy into that folder will sync to your online Google Drive account.

Step 2

Update the paths to your files in httpd.conf located in C:\wamp\bin\apache\Apache2.4.4\conf\httpd.conf

On line 239 update DocumentRoot “c:/wamp/www” to
DocumentRoot “c:/Users/[user]/Google Drive/[what ever folder your sites are in]”

On line 240 update <Directory “c:/wamp/www”> to
c:/Users/[user]/Google Drive/[what ever folder your sites are in]

If you have any virtual hosts set up, change the paths at the bottom of the httpd.conf file too for example:

ServerName yourwebsite.localhost
DocumentRoot ‘c:\Users\[user]\Google Drive\[what ever folder your sites are in]\your-website-folder’

Step 3

Open my.ini located in C:\wamp\bin\mysql\mysql5.6.12\

On line 39 change datadir=c:/wamp/bin/mysql/mysql5.6.12/data/
c:/Users/[user]/Google Drive/[create a folder called database]

Now go to C:\wamp\bin\mysql\mysql5.6.12\ and copy the contents of the folder called “data” and paste it into the folder you created in Google Drive called “database”.

And there you go. Please leave a comment here if you’re unsure about anything or if you get stuck. I will be more than happy to help you!

Hi. I'm currently 31 years old and I'm a full time Front-End Web Developer. I love cats and I love life.... sometimes. I created this blog when I was figuring out how Wordpress works and it eventually started to get a whole lot of traffic. I'm now trying to help fellow South Africans with general how to stuff for example how to renew your car license disc and also reviews like restaurants etc. I haven't done much yet but I will soon start to do more and more. I will try to write as many blog posts as I can. I hope you enjoy this blog and don't forget to leave a comment. Oh and you're welcome to write a guest post or review. I just wanna know, will wamp.exe work in google drive and how about mysqld.exe? And how are we going to access localhost?

I had the same problem. Found this solution that worked for me on Google Drive Forums…

        SOLUTION: Google Drive folder permissions.

Go to your Google Drive folder, most likely found here -> C:/Users/(user)/Google Drive
Right click that ‘Google Drive’ folder, then open:
Properties -> Security Tab -> Advanced -> Click ‘Include inheritable permissions from parent folder’

Hi, I tried this and wamp doesn’t work anymore. The icon is stuck on orange saying “1 of 2 services running” (apache being the one not running). I changed the permissions as suggested, but it made no difference. Skype is off too (I saw that might be the problem). Any other suggestions on how to solve this?
