How to cancel your TV licence in South Africa and stop paying it!
Quite a lot of people in South Africa own TV sets aren’t using it to watch SABC. Instead, they watch movies from their computer or they stream it from Netflix, Showmax or from another streaming service like Kodi. ADSL are getting cheaper by the day and more and more people are getting uncapped internet at their home.
So what is the point of paying a TV license if you’re not using it?
Well, I have some good news for you. If you can prove that you don’t have any device in your house that can receive a TV broadcasting signal like a TV or decoder, you can cancel your TV license.
You can remove your TV tuner
If you’re not using your TV to receive a broadcasting signal, you can physically remove your TV’s tuner from the TV. This will remove the need for you to pay your TV license.
You will need to get a professional to come and remove it for you. It will be a good idea to keep the receipt of the company that removed it to prove to an SABC TV inspector that you have removed the tuner from your TV. The cost to get an inspector out is R300.
You can have to send in proof once a year to the SABC that you don’t own any device that can receive a broadcasting signal. I’m not sure what proof you need to send?
Don’t own a TV set anymore?
If you have disposed of, sold your TV set or if it was stolen, you don’t need to pay a TV license. In this case, you need to fill in an affidavit to notify the SABC that you don’t have a TV set anymore and that you don’t need to pay a TV license.
